Common Winter Foot Problems

Winter can be a challenging time for your feet. Cold temperatures, reduced circulation, heavier footwear and changes in activity levels all have an impact. In clinic, we often see a rise in preventable foot problems during the colder months, many of which can be managed early with the right advice and care.

Dry, Cracked Heels
Cold air outside combined with indoor heating dries the skin, leading to hard skin and painful heel cracks. Without treatment, these cracks can deepen and increase the risk of infection.

Chilblains
Chilblains develop when the skin is exposed to cold and circulation struggles to adapt. They commonly affect toes and can cause redness, swelling, itching and discomfort. Those with circulation issues are often more susceptible.

Ingrown or Painful Toenails
Tighter winter footwear and thicker socks can increase pressure around the toes, making nail problems more common at this time of year.

Increased Foot and Heel Pain
Cold weather can cause joints and soft tissues to feel stiffer, while reduced movement and less supportive footwear can aggravate heel pain and plantar fasciitis symptoms.

How to Protect Your Feet This Winter

  • Moisturise daily using a suitable foot cream to keep skin supple
  • Avoid walking barefoot on cold floors at home
  • Choose footwear that is supportive and properly fitted, even with thicker socks
  • Keep feet warm but dry, changing socks if they become damp
  • Address hard skin and nail issues early rather than waiting for them to worsen

When to Book an Appointment

If you’re noticing pain, cracked skin, recurring nail problems or circulation concerns, a routine podiatry appointment can help keep your feet comfortable and healthy through winter. Early intervention often prevents more complex problems later on.
